flaxseed oil review-Best oil for heart health

We all use oils in our daily lives although this may differ in terms of quantity from person to person.

Some people use it to cook while some use it to grease their salad and yet others use it as supplements.

No matter what kind of oil, it is vital to not consume a ridiculous amount as this will ultimately endanger your heart.

The oils I will be talking about in this article pertain to those that you use as supplements which can help boost your general health especially heart health.

The oil I will be talking about is one which I wrote about in one of my previous posts, flaxseed oil.

In this flaxseed oil review I will talk about the best options of brands you can use to attain the best benefits from flaxseed oil.

What is Flaxseed oil

On my previous article I talked about the health benefits of flaxseed oil capsules, where I talked about their benefits to your body.

Flaxseed oil have exactly the same benefits to the flaxseed oil capsules, whereby it is filled with huge amounts of omega 3 fatty acids.

The flaxseed oil comes from a plant called flax where the seeds are pressed to release this healthy oil.

The flaxseed oil is also called linseed oil so you must never be confused when you see this.

Below I will be reviewing the best flaxseed oil brand/products that you can choose from for your heart health.

I will be walking you about the best ones and not so great ones.

Barlean’s Organic Lignan Flax Oil, 32-oz

This is a Barlean Flaxseed product which is in an oil form. Barlean is one on the top brands when it comes to heart health products. They have a very good credibility in the market, whereby they have more than 20 years of experience.

  • Gluten-free
  • Non GMO project verified.
  • Great source of Lignan and SDG

Research

  • This product is highly researched or studied and sourced only from North American seeds

Usage

This flaxseed product comes in an oil form and it can be consumed it two ways. You can either drink it directly with a teaspoon or you can put it in your smoothie or yoghurt.

The other option is to consume it by mixing it with your favorite food such as your salad or fruit juice.

  • Needs to be refrigerated

Rating

8 out 10

Barlean having been in the industry for more than 20 years it is no doubt that they know what they are doing in the industry when it comes to heart health.

This is the best flaxseed oil brand that I would recommend. The only reason I didn’t give it 10 points rating is that it has a neutral smell and you may tend to smell the oily odour.

Barlean’s Omega Swirl Flax Oil, Strawberry Banana, 16-oz

This is another one of Barlean’s product. The only difference between this one and the organic lignan (above) is the flavour.

This Swirl flaxseed oil is strawberry and banana flavoured.

Features

  • This Flaxseed product is in an oil form and is cold pressed.
  • 100% vegan based
  • Gluten-free
  • Non-GMO

Usage

This Flaxseed product can be used by drinking it directly with a spoon (Thanx to the delicious taste of strawberry and banana) or you can mix it in your yoghurt, Protein shake or smoothie daily.

Pros

  • It is packed with high amount of plant-based omega 3 fatty acids.
  • Suitable for vegans
  • Super delicious strawberry and banana taste
  • No sugar, made with xylitol
  • Brand credibility

Cons

  • None

Rating

10 out 10

With the high amount of omega 3 and a delicious taste of strawberry/banana this brand takes the crown for me. Maybe also because I am 70% vegan so I like the fact that anyone can consume it (whether you are vegan or not).

The other reason why I gave it a higher rating is that it also caters for diabetic people since no sugars are used at such a delicious taste.

On top of all the great features there is no after taste upon drinking this flaxseed oil directly (by itself).

This makes it very versatile upon consumption (whether you drink it directly or with a smoothie) unlike other flaxseed oil which you can taste that you are consuming oil.

Oh as a side note…. You will also find that when you drink this flaxseed oil you tend to taste the banana more than the strawberry. So if you do not like the taste of banana it may not be a good choice for you,but if you are like me and most people you will thoroughly enjoy the taste.

Deva Organic Vegan Vitamins Flax Seed Oil, Omega-3, 90 Vcaps (Pack of 2)

If you are a vegetarian or a vegan you would be totally happy to know that this company/brand widely focuses on making products that are 100% vegan or vegetarians.

Deva has 15 years experience in the industry of heart health were they focus 100% on vegetarian or vegan products.

Unlike the Barlean brand their products tend to be more broader than just heart health supplements.

Features

  • Organic
  • Cold pressed
  • 100% vegetarian
  • Gluten-free

Usage

This products is in a capsule form and must be drank like a pill or supplement.

Pros

  • Vegan-friendly
  • Easy to swallow
  • Good credibility for vegetarian/vegan products

Cons

  • Large size of capsules.
  • Taste is not as good

Rating

5 out 10

This is yet another good product for vegans however the taste is what made me give it a lower rating. The taste is very dull.

The other reason is because this flaxseed oil capsule has a large capsule size which can be a problem when consuming it.

NOW Flax Oil 1000 mg,250 Softgels

Now is another brand that has been in the industry for a very long time, even longer then Barlean and Deva.

Now hails experience of 50 years already whereby they have been focusing on different health products and supplements.

Their main priority has been safety of their products at all times.

Features

  • Non-GMO
  • Organically produced

Usage

This products is in a capsule form and must be drank like a pill or supplement.

Pros

  • Good price

Cons

  • White Opaque bottle
  • Capsule form

Rating

5 out of 10

The rating for this brand is very low because it doesn’t accommodate vegetarians and also it has an opaque bottle.

However, I would say NOW is a good company for flaxseed since they have been there for a while in the industry so they are very reliable.

But when it comes to their individual products like this it would have been better to make a product which caters for vegetarians or vegans as well.

Barlean’s Total Omega Vegan Swirl Flax/Borage Oil, Pomegranate Blueberry, 16-oz

This is another one of Barlean’s product. If you are not a fan of banana or strawberry (Omega swirl of strawberry and banana flaxseed oil flavour mentioned above) here is another product that is also top quality and it is pomegranate and blueberry flavor.

The delicious fruity taste and vegan friendly factor gives this flaxseed oil a very good rating as well. This is similar to the strawberry and banana flavour as it is versatile allowing you to drink it directly without tasting the ugly oil.

You can also use it in your smoothie or protein shake etc.

Nature-Made Flaxseed Oil 1,000 mg Softgels, 180 ct

This flaxseed oil review would be incomplete without the Nature-Made flaxeed oil.

Nature-Made brand has over 20 years of experience in making health products and supplements.

The products are scientifically researched before they make them for the consumers.

The best aspect about Nature Made is because they have their own in-house researchers who have been participating in the health industry research.

This makes their products good value for money.

Feature

  • Made from a certified organic source
  • Well researched products
  • Gluten-free and has no preservatives
  • Capsule form

Usage

This product can be consumed in capsule form.

Pros

  • Consistent good quality capsules by the brand (due to the brand’s extensive research).

Cons

  • Capsule form

Rating

8 out 10

This is again a very great product on the market. The only aspect not giving this product all the points is due to it being a capsule form.

Otherwise, it is the best capsule form of flaxseed due to the research that is backing the production of the product.

This is indeed their top product for flaxseed oil.

Pure Flax Oil, 250 count softgels bottle

This is another one of Barlean’s product which uses capsules. If you prefer capsules instead of oil it would be better to opt for this option.

  • It is packed with high amount of plant-based omega 3.
  • Gluten-free

Cons

  • Capsule form

Rating

8 out 10

The brand Barlean) is very credible once again, but again I do not like the capsule part of the product since it takes out the versatile consumption.

This is the reason for the rating.

I hope this flaxseed oil review was helpful to you for choosing the right flaxseed oil that will be good for your consumption.

I would love to hear your thoughts about these flaxseed oil products or if you have questions related to this post.

Thank you Thabo for these great recommendations. I know that omega 3 fatty acids are good for your health but I’ve only ever taken them in a capsule form which I swallow. however, some of them are not that easy to swallow sometimes as the capsules can be quite large. I’d not thought of adding them to a smoothie or yoghurt before. Do you think they affect the flavour or is it that you just don’t taste them? Which one of these is your absolute favourite?
    Thanks Gail

    • Thabo

      Hey Gail

Thanx for your feedback. I would highly recommend you consume the flaxseed oil instead of the flaxseed oil capsule.
This will enable you to add it in your favorite foods such as smoothies or shakes or even yoghurt.
My favorite is the Barlean’s Omega Swirl Flax Oil, Strawberry Banana, 16-oz since it has a strawberry taste..yummy

  • Erika

This article is exactly what I was looking for – I have some family members interested in trying out some oils, but didn’t know where to start, so I’ll definitely be sharing this with them. Thanks!

  • sumit

    Hello Thabo,
I found it very interesting and informative. It’s time to take care of health and after reading your post, I will be able to take care of my heart better and your review on different flaxseed oil is going to help me a lot.

    Thanks for sharing it.

  • Melinda

I think these are great alternatives for people who are vegan. I eat plenty of fish and meat, so I don’t touch flaxseed oil. I’m sure vegetarians and vegans need it though.

    • Thabo

      Hey Melinda
      Thanx for your feedback

Anyone can consume them because they help with many heart health benefits such as lowering cholesterol, skin care and more.
The vegan option mean anyone can use them, unlike the non-vegan option which restricts vegans.

  • Tony

Great article. I personally did not know too much about flax seed so this article was very informative. I didn’t realize flax seeds had so much omega 3. I’ll have to consider adding it to my diet.

    • Thabo

Please do add flaxseed oils they will definitely improve your health. You can read my previous article for more information

  • Hekuran

    Hey Thabo!

Flaxseed oil is one of the favorite worldwide no doubt and we certainly needed a review like this.
Thanks for sharing this with us, I loved to read it. I already made my choice.

    -Hekuran

Are there any side effect worth mentioning about flaxseed oil?

  • Dwyan Anthony Alford

Hey Thabo – what about the flax seeds(eating them directly) do they provide any added benefit or would be oil be better? I imagine not much of a difference or maybe there is. Someone in the comments said she eats a lot of meat and fish so she doesn’t need the flaxseed oil, you pointed out the benefits like lowering cholesterol, and you are right to say that. People still see meat and fish as healthy options over plant-based, that’s unfortunate. I got turned on to flaxseed about 5 years ago and its something I incorporate in my diet every day.

    • Thabo

The flaxseed oil seeds have exactly the same benefit with the seeds be more advantage due to their natural state,

Yeah I also see plant based diet as being the best diet.

I also started consuming flaxseed oil like 8 years ago

  • Delanee B

What a great read on Flax Oil and thank you for breaking down each item perfectly for me to understand! I use Nature Made vitamins, but I might consider just moving over the oil form and adding it to my yogurt! The banana and strawberry flavor from Barlean sounds amazing! I had no clue that flax seed comes in so many different flavors! I will definitely refer to this the next time I head to the store!

    • Thabo

Great stuff Delanee, Nature-Made are very good too. Yeah I really recommend flaxseed oil as you can add on your normal foods

  • Les Trow

I liked the article. It was very interesting but I didn’t see any info. on how it compared to other healthy oils. I would of really appreciated a comparison for price and benefits of a few.

    • Thabo

      Hey Les
Please note this was a review talking about flaxseed oil. So I was comparing the different brands of flaxseed oil.
      I appreciate your input

  • Marie

Amazing review Thabo! It was not only very interesting to read but also very informative.

I honestly love the way you broke it down for each product with the Features, Pros, Cons, and Ratings…makes it a whole lot easier for one like me that is now venturing into using flaxseed oils.

I will definitely share this with friends and family…Thanks!

    • Thabo

      Hey Marie

I am happy I could be of great assistance to you. The most important thing is for you to know that any flaxseed oil is good but the flavors you want and type will determine what you choose.

I am glad It was very easy to understand as I made sure it was simple

  • Rob

I loved your article because I know how beneficial is to your health. Since I have type 2 diabetes, I write and know about a lot of different things that help with diabetes and lowering blood sugar and I know that flaxseed is one of them. And it’s easy to add to meals such as salads. I believe that more people should consider flaxseed as part of their diets. Do you support a specific brand? Thanks for sharing 🙂
    ~Rob

    • Thabo
