Heart healthy muffins-Can this even be possible?

heart healthy muffins

Those of you who have been following my site know of my heart story where I took a quest to cure my blocked heart arteries which developed at a young age (if you haven’t you can check it out here).

Being on this journey of taking care of my heart had left me not even eating my favorite snacks (muffins).

This soon became a thing of the past when I learnt to find the good muffins which were not only going to lead to me having unclogged arteries but which were going to add more life to my years.

Since I have been on this journey I am happy to share with you the best muffins that are not only best tasting and healthy but ones which will help with keeping you heart healthy.

Let’s start with our heart healthy muffin article

What to look for in muffins

Let’s be real… Muffins in their general form are junk food and there is no escape to that.

The good thing is that you can make them healthy by making them yourself so that you can choose the healthy ingredients.

In an ideal world we would all be able to bake such muffins using the right ingredients but the truth is that not everyone has the time or patience to do that.

heart healthy muffins

This is why I will walk you through ways you can eat already made hearth healthy muffins by taking note of some details.

I will also give recipes to those who have the time or prefer to do it themselves.

Firstly let’s start with choosing the right heart healthy muffins that have already been made;

So you are at work or at a meeting or perhaps a gathering with friends and you get offered muffins but you do not know whether they are heart healthy or not, so what do you do?

I have a few guidelines I follow when choosing the right muffins for heart health. I will list them below:

  • wholewheat made muffins

This is the first step which I follow when choosing a heart healthy muffin. I have talked about the healthy benefits of wholewheat on this article.

The main thing is to look at the color of the muffin, generally the darker the color the better for me.heart healthy muffins

However, as I mentioned before, just because bread or muffin looks dark doesn’t guarantee it as being wholewheat or healthy.

The other aspect is that if your muffin is DARK CHOCOLATE than it generally is a better option than others.

If you have read my other articles you will know the heart health of dark chocolate, If you have not you can read this post.

Note I said better so I did not say it is a heart healthy choice, because at the end of the day the muffin doesn’t just constitute of the dark chocolate only, there may be other ingredients which may compromise your heart health.

  • No eggs

I know some of you may already be saying no ways!!!!!!! But let me explain this reason for no egg in your muffins.

heart healthy muffins

Egg (yolk part) is filled with the bad cholesterol and this is what constitutes the major part of the unhealthy cholesterol. There are substitutes for egg if you wish and they will not necessary change the taste of the muffin. I know because I have dabbled around with different diets from Vegetarian to vegan and to Mediterranean diet.

These diets have helped me learn to eat foods without eggs and also how to substitutes eggs and many unhealthy ingredients in foods.

The good thing is that if you put eggs in moderation or eat muffins with eggs, in moderation than it should not be a problem, but if you are strictly looking to unclog heart arteries or want to have the best heart health conditions it is better to consume muffins with no eggs. I will show you some recipes you can follow.

  • Oatmeal ingredients

The presence of oatmeal is another great aspect. I have written about the heart health benefits of oatmeal on my other article.

There are plenty of healthy oatmeal muffins out there that you can be able to consume and many of them tend to have less or no sugar at all.

The following section is for those who are keen on making their heart healthy muffins. I will give you some of my recipes which I have used to make these heart healthy muffins.

Chocolate oatmeal muffin

Anything with chocolate is a very good choice and that is why this is my favorite muffin recipe.

Below is the ingredients and steps of how to make these muffins.

  • Blender
  • Muffin tin tray

  • 2 large eggs (beaten)heart healthy muffons
  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • 2 tablespoons of oat
  • 1/2 cup of milk (low fat)
  • 4 tablespoons of cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 3 large ripe bananas (smash than in a cup)

Step 1

Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius.heart healthy muffins

Step 2

Place oat in baking sheet and let them toast until they turn brownish (light). Then let them cool at room temperature.

Step 3

Using a blender put one cup of oats in and blend until the mixture looks flour-like.

Step 4

Put the bananas in blender and blend to at least a minute. Add the honey, eggs and milk into the mixture and blend further (about 30 seconds to 1 minute)

Step 5

Add the old fashion oat to the mix and allow this dry ingredient to mix with the other mixture on the blender. Let it sit for 5 minutes.

Step 6

Add in your 1/2 cup chocolate chips to the muffin tin tray after you have added oil on the muffin tray bases (to allow the muffin to be extracted easily).

Step 7

Using some left over oats and chocolate chips sprinkle them on the muffin and make sure they are stuck on all the muffins.

Step 8

Bake the mixture for about 20 minutes. Use a toothpick to check if they are ready. If you insert a toothpick into the center of the muffin and it comes out clean than you are set to eat your muffins.

Healthy chocolate muffin/cookie with no flour, eggs and sugar

heart healthy muffins

If you are in dire need of a heart healthy muffin which can help with eliminating clogged heart arteries and eliminate or at least lessen the effect of diabetes than this option will be good for you.

I love this recipe because it helped me enjoy my muffins although I was suffering from clogged heart arteries in 2010.

I have provided this recipe to help people who may be in the situation I was in or a similar one.

Below is the muffin recipe that will help you feel guilt-free after eating your muffins.

This however may be more of a cookie than it is a muffin but in any case it falls under heart healthy muffins.

  • Plain baking tray
  • Baking sheet
  • Oven

  • 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 large ripe banana
  • 2 tablespoons of almond butter or peanut butter
  • 1/4 of teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of old fashion oats

Step 1

Preheat oven to 180 degree Celsius.

Step 2

Put bananas in the blender and blend until it is smooth.

Step 3

Add all other ingredients into the blender with the banana and blend until the mixture is smooth.

Step 4

Using a spoon or your desired utensil scoop about 2 tablespoons of the mixture and place different batches on the baking sheet. Add in your favorite fruit or nuts on the scooped lumps on the baking sheet.

Step 5

Bake for about 15 minutes. Check if ready by using a toothpick(if it comes out clean your muffins are ready).

Important points to consider

The recipes I just gave you are what my mom used to help me cope with my clogged heart arteries so that I do not get left behind when everyone is having treats at home.

There are points are always put as a priority when making your heart healthy muffins and they are the following:

  • These heart healthy muffins can shock your friends

Contrary to popular belief having a healthy muffin doesn’t have to be costly of impossible to do. So when you do these recipes for your friends without a doubt they will be shocked that you can be able to do heart healthy muffins with no sugar or flour and still have the same taste as your normal muffins.

  • These recipes do not have to be expensiveheart healthy muffins

With the recipes I gave you you will find that they do not cost you a lot of money like many healthy recipes.

  • Ease of manipulation

Unlike conventional muffin recipes it is easy to play around with the ingredients to add more options in these recipes. Like in the chocolate muffin you could add any variety of fruits that you like.

Final thoughts

Having a heart healthy muffin is very hard to find in the real world but if you have the time and the patience for making your own heart healthy muffin it could be a great heart snack.

If you are willing to experiment you will find these recipes very addictive and easy to do.

If you are lazy you will be left with the choice to try seive through what you see as a heart healthy recipe with your own eyes, judgment and asking around.

I still do recommend that you follow a proper diet so that this can be something that becomes a priority in your life. If you are looking for ways you can be disciplined and follow a chosen diet here is an article I wrote for you.

This will help you be stick to your healthy diet (no matter what it is) until the end.

I hope you enjoyed this heart healthy muffin article and I hope it added value in your pursuit to heart health.
